Moldova is relatively new to the competition, participating for four years in a row with its first entry being in 2005. Since their inclusion in this event, they have not seen much success. After a poor showing in the 2006 competition, the country decided not to fund a Eurovision the following year, in 2007. After much outside pressure, they finally sent an entry to the competition. In 2008, Moldova failed to make it to the finals.
Since 2005, Moldova has received more votes from Romania than any other country. Likewise, Moldova has voted for Romania more than any country. This makes sense due to the fact that Moldova borders Romania and the two countries have been in political contact. Moldova was made independent from Russia in 1991 and was immediately seen this way by Romania who had interest in becoming one with Moldova. Although Moldova has not shared interest in combining with Romania, the two countries share a special relationship.
Because Moldova is such a young country, not to mention an inexperienced competitor in Eurovision, it is easy to see why it has struggled to compete with long-standing competitors like Spain and The United Kingdom.

Song Information
The song being sung by Nelly Ciobanu in Eurovision is called "Hora Din Moldova", meaning "Dance of Moldova". The majority of the song is sung in Romanian, composed by Veaceslav Daniliuc with the Romanian lyrics by Andrei Hadjiu and Ciobanu herself. The English parts of the song are by Aristotelis Kalimeris, who also helped compose "A flight to Light", which took second place in the Moldovan final. Ciobanu's performance in Moscow will be similar to that of the Moldovan finals. She will be accompanied by a male backup singer and joined on stage by two male and two female dancers. The lyrics of the song have been modified from the way they were originally sung, by changing the parts that will be sung in English. The lyrics that follow are a rough translation found at this link: <http://lyricstranslations.com/eurovision-lyrics/eurovision-2009-moldova-nelly-ciobanu-hora-din-moldova> Because so many past winners have used english as their predominate singing language, most contestants try to find a balance of english mixed in with their official national language.
"Hora Din Moldova" starts out in a sort of chant by Nelly Ciobanu, which quickly changes to focus on the trumpets and musical background. The song, in some ways, can be related to older Bali movies where the voice is the center focus. The voice is smooth, but strong, and the instruments complement the voice well. The song is fast and up beat, with a lot of shouting that is all very joyful. You can easily hear a constant percussion in the back. Trumpets and possibly a flute accompany the percussion. This song is very happy and up beat that can make anyone want to get up and dance.
Hora Din Moldova
All the mountains, all the seas
All the winds are dancing hora
It’s a dance you’ve never seen
From my country called Moldova
and the flight
brings sorrow
In the fire of a love’s game
It’s the dance from Moldova! Ru!
When you love, I caress
When you spin, I give my life
All with fire come in the game
It’s lucky
Ra, he hey, he hey
Come to the dance, come to the dance from Moldova
Ra, he hey, he hey
The dance is hot, the dance from Moldova is hot
Ra, he hey, he hey
Come to the dance, come to the dance from Moldova
Ra, he hey, he hey
The dance is hot, the dance from Moldova is hot
The green leaf of a pea plant, more
Jump, jump around
Come play our dance
Come shout louder musician So all people can hear it
Both the young and the older
Jump, jump around, more
All the seas, all the winds
All the feelings that you get from hora
All the day, past and nowaday
Oh the dance you wanna play
Ra, he hey, he hey
Come to the dance, come to the dance from Moldova
Ra, he hey, he hey
The dance is hot, the dance from Moldova is hot
Ra, he hey, he hey
Come to the dance, come to the dance from Moldova
Ra, he hey, he hey
The dance is hot, the dance from Moldova is hot
